Which Division is my child in?

The Leaside Hockey School offers four programs for various age groups. U5, U6, U7, and U8 serve children from ages 4 to 7. Placement in these programs are based on your child's birth year. See the below list to find out which group your child belongs in this year.

Our Hockey School offers:

• Hockey School is an introductory program for our youngest players, designed to offer a fun and safe learning environment that focuses on developing basic hockey skills while fostering a love for the game and encouraging them to continue participation in the sport.
• The program is run by Hockey Extreme, an organization with over 25 years of experience – their professional, caring instructors are passionate about the game and about making sure our kids have fun while developing foundational hockey skills.
• Activities will vary by age group, but are comprised of a variety of creative drills designed to develop basic hockey skills, supplemented by small-area scrimmages that offer a fun way to apply the skills they have learned along with teamwork and interpersonal development.
• The program encourages parents to participate with their children on-ice and offers tools to expand knowledge of the sport and proper instruction techniques, helping develop their capabilities as potential future coaches in Leaside Hockey house league and competitive programs.

Due to the current lack of visibility around the upcoming season, we have decided to open registration for Hockey School / House League but defer collection of fees until a later date.

Based on a similar program to the one we ran last season, the expected fee for a full 2020/21 season would be $635 per player. However, fees may change if we are required to modify our programming due to circumstances beyond our control, such as:

• Directives from local, provincial or federal governments or corresponding health authorities
• Changes in rules, regulations, insurance coverage and other requirements from our governing hockey bodies
• Ice facilities becoming unusable temporarily or permanently

We will communicate the fee and payment details to all registrants as soon as we are able to finalize our program schedule. Please continue to monitor the website for future updates as well.

Leaside Hockey Association 2020 / 21 Refund Policy

After the season starts, the LHA may be required to modify or suspend our programming as a result of circumstances beyond our control, including but not limited to:

• Directives from local, provincial or federal governments or corresponding health authorities;
• An outbreak of COVID-19 within the Leaside Hockey community (players, families, arena staff, external service providers, etc.);
• Changes in rules, regulations, insurance coverage and other issues by our governing hockey bodies;
• Ice facilities becoming unusable temporarily or permanently due to COVID-19 related closures, fires, mechanical failure, labour disruption or weather-related events

The LHA will make every effort to respond to and mitigate the impact of any unforeseen circumstances as they arise.  To the extent that a suspension, reduction or variation in programming is required the LHA will make best efforts to provide refunds to the extent it is practicable* and commits to at all times act on a good faith basis.

Players and families will be required to follow certain mandated protocols designed to promote safety in our LHA programs, which might include (but are not limited to) thermal scans, self-reporting/quarantine, medical questionnaires, etc. Failure to adhere to the required protocols may result in prohibition from participating in LHA programming. In such circumstances, players may not be eligible for a refund.

*NOTE - the LHA is a not-for-profit organization run largely by volunteers.  The LHA’s predominant expense (~80%) is related to the procurement of ice for use in our program.  Participant insurance costs and league fees represent an further ~10% of total LHA expenses.  For the 2020 / 21 season the LHA has made every effort to include, where possible, contractual provisions (“COVID-19 Clauses”) which  provide for a refund or credit of unused ice costs in the event that the involved arena / facility becomes inaccessible due to circumstances beyond the LHA’s control.

• CAS-approved Helmet with facemask
• Hockey Gloves
• Neck Guard
• Elbow Pads
• Shin Pads
• Shoulder Pads
• Jock / Jill
• Hockey Pants
• Hockey Skates
• Hockey Stick (taped at the end so that it can’t fit through the cage of a helmet)

*Long johns and a thin long sleeve shirt (or pajamas) under equipment will help to prevent straps from digging in to skin (shin pads and elbow pads especially).
